Supporting Young Parents and Their Children

Pregnant and parenting teens face the responsibilities of adolescence and parenthood at the same time.

Sunshine provides a structured residential environment where young parents can care for their children, continue working toward personal goals, and prepare for greater independence.

Our role is to support and strengthen the young parent—not replace them. Staff provide guidance, modeling, encouragement, and supervision while helping each teen become increasingly confident in managing the everyday responsibilities of parenthood.

Creating Consistent Family Routines

Young parents may receive support with:

      • Establishing daily routines for themselves and their children
      • Organizing baby and childcare supplies
      • Maintaining a clean and child-appropriate living space
      • Planning meals and household responsibilities
      • Managing time and daily schedules
      • Balancing parenting with school and personal responsibilities
      • Planning for transportation and appointments
      • Budgeting for personal and childcare needs
      • Building communication and self-advocacy skills
      • Preparing for a future living arrangement

Support is provided through everyday instruction and practice within the home.

Supporting the Young Parent

Pregnant and parenting teens remain young people with their own developmental, educational, and emotional needs.

Staff encourage young parents to:

      • Take an active role in caring for their child
      • Ask questions and seek appropriate guidance
      • Build confidence in their parenting abilities
      • Establish safe and consistent household routines
      • Identify personal and family goals
      • Develop practical skills for supporting themselves and their children
      • Build a dependable network of approved support

Sunshine recognizes that each young family has different strengths, needs, and circumstances. Support is individualized and coordinated with the young parent’s authorized team.

Our responsibility is to provide a safe and supportive residential environment while helping young parents build skills they can carry into adulthood.
