Family Connection & Transition Support
At Sunshine Residential Homes, one of our central goals is to help children and youth stabilize while their larger child welfare team works toward the safest and most appropriate next step. Whenever possible, that next step may include reunification with family, placement with kinship caregivers, transition to a foster home, or another permanency plan determined by the child’s team.
We recognize that family connection can be an important part of a child’s healing, stability, and sense of identity. For children with approved family contact or reunification goals, Sunshine supports visitation and communication as appropriate and in alignment with each child’s case plan, service plan, safety needs, and referring agency guidance. These moments can help preserve important relationships and support smoother transitions when a child is preparing to return to a family-like setting.
Our work is child-centered and team-based. Sunshine collaborates with child welfare professionals, behavioral health providers, schools, families when appropriate, courts, and other members of the child’s support system. Rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach, we focus on the individual needs of each child, providing structure, supervision, daily routines, emotional support, and practical care while their team works toward permanency or the next appropriate placement.
Each year, approximately 80–90% of the children and youth in our care transition back to family-like settings. This reflects the importance of stabilization, consistent care, strong communication, and thoughtful social work practice. At Sunshine, family transition support is not just about where a child goes next; it is about helping each child move forward with dignity, connection, and the support they need for the next safe and appropriate chapter in their life.
Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all approach, we enlist the expertise of social workers and other allied professionals to ensure that each child’s unique needs are met. Our staff closely monitors these transitions, offering the emotional and practical support needed to navigate these life-changing events successfully. By focusing on the children and facilitating familial interactions where appropriate, Sunshine Residential Homes demonstrates a commitment to individualized, holistic care. Our Family Transition Support Program isn’t just about numbers or ticking boxes; it’s about meaningful, impactful changes in the lives of children who need it most. Guided Mentorship Program
Positive adult relationships can play an important role in helping children and youth build confidence, develop goals, and feel supported during times of transition. At Sunshine Residential Homes, mentorship is part of our broader child welfare approach to promoting stability, connection, and hope.
Mentorship happens in many ways at Sunshine. Our in-house team members often serve as consistent, trusted adults who provide daily encouragement, guidance, life skills support, and positive role modeling. In addition, Sunshine may also utilize approved outside volunteers, community partners, and organizations such as OCJ Kids to help create meaningful connections and opportunities for youth.
These mentorship opportunities are coordinated in a way that supports each child’s needs, interests, service plan, safety considerations, and the guidance of their child welfare team. Mentors may help youth explore school goals, career interests, personal responsibility, healthy relationships, and future planning.
For children and youth who have experienced trauma, disruption, or loss, appropriate and consistent support from caring adults can help reinforce a sense of belonging and possibility. Through both our internal team and community partnerships, Sunshine works to surround children with encouragement, positive experiences, and guidance as they move toward the next safe and appropriate chapter in their lives.

Community Outreach
At Sunshine Residential Homes, we recognize the transformative power of community support. Our Community Partnerships and Engagement Program builds bridges between our children and the local community by collaborating with various organizations, businesses, and individual contributors. Through these alliances, we create a vibrant support network that enriches the lives of our children and fosters their holistic development.
A standout partner in our program is Arizona Sunshine Angels, a dedicated non-profit organization that has been enriching the lives of foster children since 1999. Their “Angels” volunteers bring a personalized touch to each of our houses. From celebrating birthdays with custom cakes to organizing house-wide festivities, their involvement adds a layer of warmth and belonging for our children.
Our partnerships go beyond mere collaboration; they are symbiotic relationships that enhance both the community and the lives of the children we serve. Through this community integration, children learn about social responsibility and the benefits of being engaged, active community members. These experiences not only enrich their lives but also inspire them to become future agents of change.
This program also serves as an educational experience for our community partners. By collaborating with us, they gain insights into the unique challenges and opportunities associated with foster care, deepening their understanding and enabling them to make a more meaningful impact. By connecting our homes with the community, Sunshine Residential Homes extends its reach far beyond its walls. The Community Partnerships and Engagement Program is a shining example of how foster care can be deeply integrated into the fabric of society.
