From Emergency Placement to Wholesome Citizens

In keeping with our mission statement, the primary objective of Sunshine Residential Homes is not merely to offer temporary refuge but to “integrate our children into society as wholesome citizens.”

From Placement to Stability and Connection

At Sunshine Residential Homes, our mission is to provide safe, supportive, and compassionate care for children and youth during times of transition. Our role is not only to provide a temporary place to stay, but to help stabilize each child, support their individual needs, and work in collaboration with their child welfare team toward the safest and most appropriate next step, whether that is reunification, kinship care, foster care, permanency, or independent living.

Supporting Growth Through Meaningful Programs

Our programs are designed to support the whole child while staying aligned with each youth’s service plan and case plan. Through educational support, tutoring connections, Independent Living preparation, life skills development, mentoring opportunities, and our All for Success program, we encourage children and youth to stay connected to school, goals, and future opportunities. We are especially proud to celebrate academic milestones, including several consecutive years in which every eligible youth expected to graduate middle school or high school successfully did so.

Individualized Support for Different Needs

Sunshine provides care for a range of children and youth, including sibling groups, all-boys homes, all-girls homes, pregnant and parenting teens, and youth preparing for greater independence. We support age-appropriate life skills such as personal responsibility, job readiness, interview preparation, school engagement, vocational exploration, and daily routines that help youth build confidence and prepare for their next chapter.

Prioritizing Safety, Dignity, and Well-Being

Safety and emotional well-being are central to our work. As behavioral health needs continue to challenge communities across Arizona, Sunshine remains committed to strengthening staff through trauma-informed training, de-escalation practices, relationship-based care, and consistent routines that promote dignity, stability, and respect. Our focus is always on creating a safe, structured environment where children and youth can be supported with patience, professionalism, and compassion.

Connection to Community

We believe children and youth benefit from opportunities that promote normalcy, belonging, and positive experiences. Whether through school events, seasonal activities, community outings, celebrations, or opportunities for growth, Sunshine works to help children stay connected to the world around them while their larger team works toward the safest and most appropriate long-term plan.

For more than 30 years, Sunshine Residential Homes has carried forward the legacy of Simon and Elizabeth Kottoor by serving children and youth with compassion, structure, and purpose. Every day, our team works to live that mission by supporting stability, preserving connections whenever possible, and helping children and youth move toward the next safe and appropriate chapter in their lives.

Sunshine Residential Homes is more than a care facility. It’s a community-driven force committed to transforming lives through education, safety, and robust programs. We strive to live our mission every day, ensuring that each child is given the opportunity to integrate into society as a wholesome citizen.
